because we're all human and a little hello won't hurt anyone

Imagine getting a text from a colleague that just says "Need your help with something." No greeting, no pleasantries. It feels a bit cold, doesn't it?

In our rush to be efficient, we sometimes forget that communication is fundamentally human. A simple "hello" acknowledges the person on the other end and sets a friendly tone.

Why greetings matter

  • They establish a human connection before diving into business
  • They set a friendly, respectful tone for the conversation
  • They give the recipient a moment to mentally prepare for your request
  • They acknowledge that you're talking to a person, not just a response machine

❌ Don't do this

hi!
*no response*
JV
Juniper Void17:22
hello?
*still no response - maybe they're just busy, but a quick reply would've helped*

✅ Do this instead

EN

hii!
JV
Juniper Void09:46
hey
*Juniper realizes they might not get a quick reply - so they keep working on other tasks*
EN
Echo Nebula10:32
hey, sorry for the wait - just saw your message! could you help me with that design review when you have a moment?

Finding the balance

Of course, there's a middle ground. You don't need to exchange pleasantries for ten minutes before getting to your point. A simple greeting followed by your question is often the perfect balance between efficiency and humanity.

The perfect formula:

[Greeting] + [Context/Question] = Efficient AND Human

Example: "Hey Nova! When you have a moment, could you review the draft I sent yesterday? No rush."
